The device (1) has a base element (11) intended to be in contact with a ballast layer (3), and a sliding element (12) intended to be connected to a railway track. A linear sensor measures a vertical displacement of the sliding element relative to the base element, and a radio or GSM type transmitter wirelessly transmits the measured vertical displacement. The base element includes a vertical rod (11A) terminated at its lower end by a base plate (11B), where the sliding element is provided around the vertical rod. An independent claim is also included for a system for remote monitoring of the variation of the vertical distance between a railway track and a ballast layer.
