Liquefaction of solid carbon dioxide, comprises directly contacting a first fluid (9) containing solid carbon dioxide and liquidates with a second fluid (4) containing gaseous carbon dioxide. The contacting step is carried out in a contactor (3) under a pressure that is higher than a triple point of carbon dioxide. The first fluid is injected above a level of injection of the second fluid in the contactor. An independent claim is included for an apparatus for liquefaction of solid carbon dioxide.
