The method involves opening a traction chain in a car by opening a coupling element of the car. Gear-reduction ratio of an automated gear box of the car and an accelerator pedal is controlled by a manual control unit. An action of a driver on the manual control unit is carried out as a condition for activation or deactivation of a freewheel mode. The driver action on the control unit is a request for changing downward gear-reduction ratio when the freewheel mode is activated (130), where the control unit is formed as a lever and a pallet. An independent claim is also included for a car.
