The method involves generating progressive increase in lighting distance of a light beam according to speed of a motor vehicle during control of a dipped headlight position (LB) toward a long range headlight position (SB) e.g. road headlight position. The lighting distance of the light beam is adjusted by an adjusting unit of projectors between the dipped headlight position and the long range headlight position. The presence of a target vehicle located ahead is detected using a detecting unit. An independent claim is also included for a motor vehicle comprising a lighting system.
