The manhole (5) has a spillplate (6) with a peripheral wall defining an access opening intended to be closed partly by a lid. A safety device (8) includes rods (91, 92, 101, 102) extending across the access opening below the lid, and in different vertical planes spaced from each other such that the rods divide the access opening into openings having dimensions smaller than the average stoutness of a child. The rods have lengths such that end regions of the rods project out of the access opening by passing through holes (11) made in a wall of the spillplate.
