The method involves coupling a thermal engine (5) to an electric machine (7) of a vehicle (1). The current is supplied to the machine by an electric power storage (10). The machine is controlled according to a particular mode in which the current at the boundaries of the storage is null. An automatic system of the vehicle is used to limit or control advance speed of the vehicle according to a set point speed. The particular mode is activated or deactivated according to the required torque to respect an acceleration set point of the automatic system. An independent claim is also included for a vehicle comprising a unit for implementing a method for controlling an electric machine of a vehicle.
