The method involves activating a brake light when torque (bm-eM) supplied by an electrical machine exceeds a preset threshold. The activated brake light is deactivated when the torque falls below another preset threshold, which is smaller than the former threshold. The brake light is activated and/or deactivated based on a motor speed gradient (n-eM), supplied current (I-eM), a vehicle deceleration value (a-Fzg) of the machine. The vehicle deceleration is determined based on a signal (a-S) of an acceleration sensor.
