The base has a comfort tablecloth (80) stretched over a reinforcement (90), and a lining comprising a filling. A presence detection sensor (20) is arranged in the filling, and has planar outer surfaces. The tablecloth has an integrally formed fixing surface (81), where one of the outer surfaces is placed in direct contact with the fixing surface. Another outer surface has a foam layer (23) with an upper surface that stays in continuous contact with the underside of the filling for supporting the transmission of compression of the filling towards the sensor. An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting the presence of an occupant of a vehicle seat.
