A failure prediction device 10 generates a failure predictor pattern according to previous failures in a system, e.g. data centre 2, in a first system configuration. When the system changes to a second configuration, prediction device 10 calculates the difference between the system configurations by accumulating the number of times that configuration items have changed (for example due to version update). Device 10 then determines whether the predictor pattern is still applicable to detection prediction of failures in the second configuration. Configurations are stored in the configuration management database (CMDB) 5. The difference can also comprise the number of differences in the configuration items between the two configurations. This allows reuse of the predictor pattern for systems existing about the same time period in a cloud and having similar configurations. Failure prediction pattern comprises a message pattern, i.e. a combination of messages generated before failure is detected.
