A method for operating a speed control system of a vehicle comprises 100 detecting the occurrence of one of a slip event and a step encounter event at the leading wheel of a vehicle 102. Possible occurrence of detected occurrence of either event at the following wheel of the vehicle is predicted 104, this may be based on at least one of vehicle speed, angle of leading wheel, angle of steering wheel and a wheelbase distance between leading and following wheels. One of the vehicle speed and vehicle acceleration is automatically controlled in response to one or both of detecting and predicting processes 106. The system is preferably used in a low speed progress/cruise control system.
