A spacer 1 for a pipe 4 to be placed in a trench (7, Figure 2) has a pipe-receiving means 2, preferably an inner ring defining an aperture into which pipe 4 is positioned, and a ground-contacting surface 3, preferably an outer ring coaxial with receiving means 2 and connected to it by radial spokes 5. Pipe 4 is preferably a perforated drainage pipe with a corrugated outer surface. Spacer 1 may be wide enough to allow for rolling over a ground, for example between 40 mm and 250 mm wide. Spacer 1 may have substantially the same width as the trench. Spacer 1 may be fixedly attached to pipe 4 using two diametrically opposed nylon barbed push fasteners passed through holes 6 in receiving means 2 and secured into a corrugation gap in an outer surface of pipe 2.
