PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae vaccines useful for treating chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases and asthma in patients.SOLUTION: Vaccines of the invention comprise a population of killed Haemophilus influenzae or a membrane fraction of a population of the killed Haemophilus influenzae, and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, where the Haemophilus influenzae is characterized by a combination of any two or more of the following characteristics: (i) non typeable; (ii) biotype I; (iii) proliferates under aerobic conditions; (iv) lacking a B capsule gene; and (v) lacking a -lactamase gene.
