PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing Ge-containing nanoparticles in a process unlike the prior art and novel Ge-containing nanoparticles, and a battery, an infrared absorption material, an infrared photodiode, a solar battery, a light emitting element and an organism recognition material including the same.SOLUTION: A method of producing Ge-containing nanoparticles is to prepare nanoparticles at least comprising Ge, by reducing Ge oxide nanoparticles, with one element which has smaller Gibbs free energy G relative to oxygen molecule (1 mol) than Gibbs free energy G of Ge relative to oxygen molecule (1 mol) in an Ellingham diagram, and is selected from the group consisting of C, H, Zn, K, Na, Cr, Mn, V, Si, Ti, Al, Mg, Ca, Sc, Sr, Nb, Li, Ba, In, Y, Hf, Zr and Ta.
