The present invention provides a method for the reductive amination of diethanolamine to form a product composition comprising piperazine (PIP) and aminoethylethanolamine (AEEA). By using a catalyst having a mixture of transition alumina / second metal oxide support and catalytic metal in the reaction, low levels of non-PIP and non-EEA by-products are achieved.
