The present invention provides new techniques for managing back pain by stimulating the spinal cord to the spinal cord refractory to noxious sensory input or transmission of undesirable sensory input. Electrical stimulation includes a predetermined pattern or a high frequency pulse which is stochastically generated by high frequency pulse or microprocessor control of complex patterns. This stimulation is applied directly to the surface of the spinal cord from the spinal canal. This important benefit is obtained than the previous technology. This stimulation, while minimizing the risk of side effects such as paresthesia, as well as the potential while minimizing the impact on the motor neuron transduction and proprioception, alleviate the symptoms and signs of back pain.
