The present invention relates to the long-term administration of selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) with short half-life for the treatment of various estrogen receptor-mediated diseases. This SERM can be administered at a concentration below that of a long half-life SERM in order to achieve an equivalent therapeutic effect. The present invention provides a method for long-term administration of SERMs that reduces or eliminates adverse effects due to long-term administration. According to this method, a pharmaceutical composition comprising an effective amount of SERM or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof having a short half-life is used to treat a disorder in a patient having one or more estrogen receptor-mediated disorders.
