PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To selectively use merchandise identification using an optical mark and merchandise identification using object recognition by a simple operation.;SOLUTION: A merchandise reading device includes: recognition means; determination means; first identification means and second identification means. The recognition means is configured to recognize an object included in a moving image picked up by an image pickup device. The determination means is configured to determine whether or not the object recognized by the recognition means has passed a second region while the object moves to a first region determined in a frame range of the moving image. The first identification means is configured to, when it is determined that the object has passed the second region by the determination means, identify candidate merchandise as a candidate of sold merchandise on the basis of a feature value which has appeared in the object in the first region.
