PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel catalyst having molecular sieve action (or shape selectivity) and excellent in catalytic activity, and a method capable of efficiently producing high-purity paraxylene dispensing with an isomerization process and/or an absorption separation process.;SOLUTION: The catalyst is obtained by modifying the outer surface of MFI type zeolite having a crystal diameter of 20-300 nm with silicate wherein the thickness of the silicate is 0.5-20 nm.
