Disclosed is a large, crosshead reciprocating piston combustion engine comprising; at least one cylinder (2) surrounding a chamber (4) for combustion ; and a piston (3) bordered by each piston related to a rotatable output crankshaft (5) through a crosshead function means (7) that realizes combustion from the fuel directly supplied into the chamber during an operation cycle inside the chamber (4) and executes scavenging by introduction of a scavenging gas pressurized from the second end part toward the first end part of the cylinder (2); wherein combustion products occurring due to combustion are recirculated at least partially to reduce nitrogen oxide contents of an exhaust gas ; and the exhaust gas due to opening of an exhaust gas outlet (13) at the first end part of the cylinder (2) and the recirculated gas due to opening of a recirculated gas outlet (15) pass from the combustion chamber (4); and the recirculated gas outlet (15) is opened several times for each time of allowing a gas path during an operation cycle of internal combustion engines; which may cause a reduction in thermal stresses of a valve (16) assigned to the recirculation gas outlet (15) as well as extension of the life; and the first opening stage of the recirculated gas outlet (15) is started at least before a start of scavenging of the combustion chamber (4) while the last opening stage is executed during a stroke of the piston toward the first end part and basically after completion of introduction of the scavenging gas into the combustion chamber (4).
