PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a contrast improving filter that exhibits a contrast improving effect with respect to external light from many directions and that makes it difficult for a light absorption part to cause remaining air bubbles and transparent parts and to provide an image display device using the same.;SOLUTION: A contrast improving filter 10 is provided with a contrast improving layer 3 having a dark frustum part 2 in which a transparent material layer 1 has a frustum-shaped open hole 2A and a dark material is filled in the frustum-shaped open hole 2A as the light absorption part. If the smallest diameter of a dark particle in the dark material is Dpmin, the diameter of the surface side opening with a larger frustum-shaped open hope 2A is Dt, and the diameter of the rear side opening with a smaller frustum-shaped open hole is Db, DtDpminDb is satisfied. Accordingly, air escapes from the rear side opening during filling and air bubbles are prevented from remaining. Dark particles serve as stopper, thereby preventing excessive squeeze out, and are spread to every corner thereby preventing occurrence of transparent part. Further, a transparent support and a functional layer may be overlaid.
