The gyratory crusher has first (4) and second (5) crush covers limiting a crush gap (6) adjustable by alteration of the relative positions of the covers. The crush gap width is adjustable by altering the relative positions of the first and second covers in an axial direction with the aid of an adjustment device (7,8,9,15). A measurement unit (12,13) measures the momentary load on the crusher to obtain a number of measurement values. A calculator (11) calculates a representation value which is representative of the highest measured momentary loads. A regulating device compares the representation value with a predetermined theoretical value, regulates the load on the crusher dependent upon this comparison.
