In the present invention, there is described the use of cheap agents for the removal of hexavalent chromium in the course of ex situ decontamination of underground water, contaminated with this contaminant. During ascending flow through a decontamination column, filled with a mixture of waste brewer’s grains and waste of soft iron occurred as a waste during chip cutting process, the hexavalent chromium is reduced to substantially less toxic and less soluble trivalent chromium.
