A process for the preparation of scintillation material based on tantalate, in particular gadolinium tantalate, involves mixing initial oxides containing tantalum, niobium and gadolinium oxides in stoichiometric ratio corresponding to general formula GdNbxTa1-xO4, wherein x=0.02-0.6, tableting prepared mixture, preliminary drying of prepared tablets at a temperature of 100-110 °C for 10-12 hours, baking tablets after drying at a temperature of 1300-1400 °C for 25-30 hours followed by cooling up to room temperature. The process provides the preparation of material with high light output and reduced luminescence decay time.
