Process for the preparation of calcium silicates capable of receiving CO {sub, 2}, from by-products, coproducts or agro-industrial residues containing calcium and silicon. As calcium source used portlandite obtained as residue from the manufacture of acetylene or calcium chloride; as silicon source coproduct rice husks or residue agroindustrial rice industry or silica powder is used. The process comprises mixing and homogenising a source of calcium and silicon and a subsequent heat treatment of the mixture at temperatures between 400C and 900C. Also, the present invention relates to the use of silicates prepared calcium by this method as selective scavengers of CO {sub, 2} in gaseous streams by carbonation in wet conditions at ambient temperature and pressure, while generating, calcites with potential industrial application.
