A gas separation system, comprising: at least one container containing at least one adsorption bed (A, B) that includes at least one adsorption material; at least one feed compressor (22) and optionally at least one vacuum compressor (50), in which at least one of the at least one feed compressor or the at least one vacuum compressor is a centrifugal compressor driven by a motor associated comprising a variable speed permanent magnet motor (29; 51) capable of operating at speeds greater than 300 RPM; and controller means (31) to receive data signals for the conditions in the system and to communicate to the permanent magnet variable speed motor (29; 51) that drives the at least one centrifugal compressor (22; 50) in response to the conditions such that the at least one centrifugal compressor can operate at a designed speed, in which the conditions comprise inlet pressure (P1; P3), outlet pressure (P2; P4) and inlet temperature (T1; T2) for the at least one centrifugal compressor (22; 50) and in which at least one bed (A, B) is configured for pressurization and cyclic depressurization during operation.
