A method for producing cartilage tissue in vitro, the method comprising: a) isolating a population of chondrocytes isolated cartilage tissue donor; b) expanding the population of cartilaginous chondrocytes in an expansion means and a substrate under conditions effective to prevent adhesion to the substrate of a majority of chondrocytes, wherein the conditions comprise expanding the population of cells using conditions comprising: ( i) a substrate having a coating of hyaluronic acid; or (ii) a substrate using an unmodified expansion means comprising hyaluronic acid solution; c) seeding a plurality of chondrocytes expanded population of cartilaginous chondrocytes in a medium of tissue production comprising TGF-β, a polycarbonate substrate having a plurality of pores therethrough, the pores having an internal diameter of the least 1 micron to about 12 microns; d) culturing the chondrocytes seeded in the middle of tissue production substrate porous polycarbonate for a period of time sufficient for the chondrocytes producing extracellular matrix, thereby producing in vivo a cartilaginous cultured tissue characterized by cell organization randomly .
