Method for increasing the capacity of a green alga of producing hydrogen, comprising transforming said alga by a polynucleotide encoding an NAD (P) H dehydrogenase type II (NDH-II), and expression of said NDH-II in said alga, wherein said NDH-II: - has at least one copy of the consensus motif GxGxxG where "G" represents a glycine and "x" represents any amino acid, - has the ability to catalyze the reduction of quinones chain electron transfer by oxidation of NADH or NDPH flavínico using a cofactor, and - is, in its active form, a monomer of 30 to 60 kDa or a homodimer.
