Self-cleaning burner system (10; 30a), comprising: at least one burner (11; 30c) in which combustion normally occurs outside the burner (11, 30c); at a distal end thereof a first valve (15; 32) for connection to a fuel source, and a first tube (12; 34) having at least one fuel control orifice (13; 36) near a discharge part of the first tube (12; 34), and the at least one burner (11; 30c), in which the first tube (12; 34) is connected to the first valve (15; 32); a second valve (24; 33) connected in series or parallel to the first valve (15; 32) and a sliding tube connected to the second valve (24; 33), the sliding tube comprising a proximal end and an end distal positioned near the discharge part of the first tube (12; 34), the sliding tube comprising a large number of holes (26c) along the sliding tube from a position near the proximal end (26a) to the distal end (26b), an ignition source (27; 37a) disposed near the proximal end of the slide tube (26; 39); and a controller (19; 30b) to control a self-cleaning burner system operation, in which the controller (19; 30b) is configured to open the first valve (15; 32) and activate the ignition source, the controller it is further configured to open the second valve for a short period of time to supply fuel to the slide tube and admit a flame formed along the length of the outer surface of the slide tube towards the proximal end of the at least a burner
