A method of preparing a biocompatible, biodegradable, non-hydrolyzed PLG slow-release copolymer material for a controlled release formulation having a weight average molecular weight of 10 kilodaltons to 50 kilodaltons and a polydispersion index of 1.4-2 , 0 and from which a deleted copolymer fraction characterized by a weight average molecular weight of 4 kDa to 10 kDa and a polydispersion index of 1.4 to 2.5 has been separated, the method comprising separating a deleted copolymer fraction characterized by a weight average molecular weight of 4 kDa to 10 kDa and a polydispersion index of 1.4 to 2.5 from starting PLG copolymer material, dissolve the starting PLG copolymer material in a solvent to provide a solution , the PLG slow discharge copolymer material then precipitating by contacting the solution with a non-solvent and collecting PL slow discharge copolymer material G precipitate, the method not comprising any step of hydrolysis of a PLG copolymer of greater molecular weight.
