A process for preparing a reaction product including silicon tetrachloride and a side product is disclosed. The process includes (I) mixing ingredients comprising: (a) silica; (b) a carbohydrate selected from a sugar, a starch, and both of the sugar and the starch; optionally (c) a catalyst; and optionally (d) a vehicle, thereby forming a composition, where ingredients (a), (b), (c), and (d) may be present in amounts totaling 100 wt%, based on the weight of the composition; optionally (A) heating the composition at a temperature of 65 °C to 150 °C, with the proviso that when ingredient (b) includes the starch, then step (A) is present and ingredient (d) is present; optionally (B) drying the composition to remove all or a portion of ingredient (d), when ingredient (d) is present; (II) pyrolyzing the composition at a temperature of 700 °C to 900 °C, thereby forming a pyrolyzed composition; and (III) carbochlorinating the pyrolyzed composition with chlorine gas at a temperature of 600 °C to 1100 °C; thereby forming the reaction product.
