METHOD OF ESTIMATING ATTENUATION OF SEISMIC WAVES

A method of estimating a quality factor (Q) that represents the summation of mechanisms that contribute to attenuation of seismic waves, the method comprising: conducting first and second seismic surveys at the same location; varying the source strength so that the second seismic survey uses a source of different strength to the first seismic survey; determining a ratio or difference between seismic traces recorded for the first and second surveys; and solving the equation given by said ratio or difference to identify the quality factor (Q).
