Different from CSMA/CD, the sender in CSMA/CN detects an unsuccessful transmission, with the aid of a collision notification (CN) from the receiver. In the present invention, one first theoretically studies the crucial impact of the CN detection threshold on system throughput in a wireless LAN. One identifies that the falsealarm probability of CN (more generally, the control frames in PHY/MAC co-designs), is a dominating metric that influences system performance. One then proposes two correlation threshold algorithms to minimize the adverse effects of the false alarm and to determine whether to activate/deactivate CSMA/CN, adapting to the change in wireless channel conditions. Extensive simulation results verify that the performance model is very accurate. The present invention will help developers select an appropriate CN detection threshold to balance various factors influencing CN performance.
