The invention relates to a position-sensitive detector for detecting photon distributions or particle distributions, wherein the detector receiving surface (1) is formed by a plurality of detector cells (2) having individual detector elements (7). A read-out device for reading out the detector elements (7) associates at least one read-out channel (5) with each detector cell (2) used for the detection in accordance with a specified association rule. The read-out device has one or more counting devices, which count detection events occurring at the detector elements (7) separately for different groups of detector elements (7), which groups are formed by means of the association rule, and a counting result for each group can be temporarily stored in a memory and/or can be output or read out via the read-out channels (5) in accordance with the association rule. The association rule is selected in such a way that a position of a photon distribution or particle distribution hitting the detector receiving surface (1) can be locally determined from the signals of the read-out channels (5). The detector can be economically realized and permits high positional resolution with a low number of read-out channels.
