The purpose of the present invention is to obtain a MgB2 superconducting wire rod having a uniform cross-sectional shape in the wire rod longitudinal direction without a defect of a barrier layer in a superconducting wire rod cross section, and to obtain a MgB2 superconducting wire rod that makes it possible to connect easily and at a low cost a plurality of MgB2 superconducting wire rods in a superconductive manner. This superconducting wire rod has: a superconducting core section containing MgB2; and a Mg section, which is formed on the outer circumference of the superconducting core section, and which is configured from unreacted metallic Mg that is left after performing heat treatment for generating superconductivity.
