The present invention provides a lithium ion secondary battery by which it is possible to detect accurately potentials of a positive electrode and a negative electrode. The lithium ion secondary battery (120) of the present invention has a positive electrode (101), a negative electrode (102), a positive electrode reference electrode (104), and a negative electrode reference electrode (105). The positive electrode reference electrode includes a reference electrode positive electrode active material used in the positive electrode of a lithium battery or a lithium ion secondary battery, the negative electrode reference electrode includes a reference electrode negative electrode active material used in the negative electrode of a lithium battery or a lithium ion secondary battery, the reference electrode positive electrode active material is, e.g., an olivine-type lithium iron phosphate, and the reference electrode negative electrode active material is, e.g., lithium titanium oxide.
