Method for preparing soft cubic ferrites of a general formula MFe2O4 comprising the steps of contacting an iron source comprising metallic iron and/or an oxide of Fe(ll), Fe(lll), Fe(ll/lll) and a metal oxide of the general formula MxOy to form a mixture, wherein the initial stoichiometric ratio of M to iron is in the range from greater than zero to about 2, and wherein M is nickel, magnesium, zinc, or a combination thereof; and calcining the mixture at a temperature range of from about 1000 °C to about 1500 °C in a static air atmosphere, to form a soft cubic ferrite of a general formula MFe2O4, wherein the mixture is not subjected to an oxidation step prior to calcining.
