A method for producing a horizontal barrier to rising damp in an absorbent solid, preferably masonry, concrete or wood, comprising: introducing a hollow tube filled with a hydrophobing material into a wellbore in the absorbent solid, and then withdrawing the hollow tube from the wellbore, such that the hydrophobing material remains in the wellbore and method of creating a horizontal barrier to rising damp in an absorbent solid, preferably masonry, concrete or wood, comprising: inserting a hollow tube into a wellbore in the absorbent solid; hydrophobicizing material into the hollow tube, and then pulling the hollow tube out of the wellbore such that the hydrophobing material remains in the wellbore.
