Systems and methods are provided for categorizing instrumental "stems" (e.g. audio data recorded from digital or live instruments, or vocal performances, etc.) and presenting this source material to users with little or no level of musical experience in a manner that grants them full control of song aspects such as genre, tempo, specific instrumentation, key, melody, audio effects, and song structure in a musical production environment. The database of available stems will be dynamically filtered based on each selection or customization made by the user in such a way as to present the users exclusively with stem recommendations that are compatible temporally, melodically, emotionally, and texturally with the sum of the choices they have already selected. The system may include an online website accessible through a web browser, or as a downloadable application for user computing devices.
