The present invention relates to a method for identifying presence of at least one potentially damaging resonant vibration state of a mechanical device, in particular, a component of a rail vehicle, comprising capturing at least one vibration signal representative of a current vibration state of the mechanical device (104), analyzing the at least one vibration signal (VS) for determining presence of at least one potentially damaging vibration component within the at least one vibration signal and for determining an amplitude information (AS) representative of an amplitude of the at least one potentially damaging vibration component, and comparing the amplitude information of the at least one potentially damaging vibration component to a threshold amplitude information previously determined for the least one potentially damaging vibration component to identify presence of the potentially damaging resonant vibration state. Analyzing the at least one vibration signal comprises using a phase-locked loop device (111.2) for identifying a frequency of a predominant vibration component within the at least one vibration signal.
