The present invention relates to a composition for preventing or treating vascular dementia comprising an inhibitor of NADPH oxidase 1 as an active ingredient, and more specifically, to a composition for preventing or treating vascular dementia comprising apocynin or shRNA of NADPH oxidase 1 as an active ingredient. According to the present invention, when inhibiting expression of Nox1 which is one of a NADPH oxidase group, formation of superoxide is inhibited in a hippocampus CA1 part of a vascular dementia patient, and damage of DNA is inhibited, and death of nerve cells is inhibited. As a result that a material of inhibiting Nox1 is administered in an animal model inducing chronic cerebral hypoperfusion, spatial memory ability and olfactory discrimination ability are increased so that the Nox1 inhibitor of the present invention can be used for preventing or treating vascular dementia.
