An object of the present invention is to easily detect a feature line or a coating defect of a liquid reservoir of a coating solution applied to a carrier film. Slurry (S) discharged from a coating head (12) is continuously applied to one main surface of the carrier film (F) returned by returning rolls (18, 20). Meanwhile, infrared light generated from infrared light (34, 36) is irradiated from the other main surface of the carrier film (F) toward the slurry (S) applied to the carrier film (F). Infrared light scattered by the slurry (S) is picked up by a camera (32). An applying state of the slurry (S) is observed on the basis of image data output from the camera (32). Moreover, coating setup of a supply amount of the slurry (S), tension of the carrier film (F), or the like is changed in accordance with an observed application state.
