Disclosed is a Sn-M-P ternary negative active material for a lithium ion battery having enhanced charge-discharge cycle characteristics. Provided is the Sn-M-P ternary negative active material, wherein Sn:M:P in the active material is expressed as x:y:z (herein, x, y, and z are the number of moles; and M is metal of at least one member selected from the group consisting of Fe, Cu, Ni, or Co) with the ranges of x:y=4 to 1:1 and (x+y):z=1:1 to 1:4 and which includes a first phase where the M is employed in the crystal structure of Sn_4P_3. According to the present invention, the negative active material realizes a high theoretical capacity that tin phosphide has and reduces a volume change in a charge-discharge cycle.
