The present invention relates to an optimal member selection method used to select the shape and cross-section of a member based on the construction conditions and loads during a civil engineering or building construction process to select the optimal member for the construction budget. According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the method includes the steps of: (a) analyzing the construction conditions; (b) calculating the loads according to the construction conditions; (c) calculating the length of basis members with respect to the effect elements of the base member according to the calculated loads; (d) determining the cross-sectional shape by selecting one of the cross-sectional shape combinations of the base member; (e) calculating the construction budget with respect the determined cross-sectional shape selected in step (d); (f) repeating the step (d) and (e); and (g) comparing the construction budgets calculated for each of the cross-sectional shapes in the step (e) and (f) and determining the cross-section of the base member to select the optimal member.
