The present invention relates to a remote firmware upgrade method for a data collection unit (DCU) taking the firmware upgrade importance level into account. The remote firmware upgrade method is used between a firmware upgrade system including a device management server, a firmware distribution server, and an authentication server and an external DCU. The method includes: a first process of performing an authentication operation and an encryption key exchanging operation between the authentication server and the DCU; a second process of enabling the device management server to prepare a firmware upgrading operation; a third process of enabling the device management server to determine whether the firmware upgrade requested from the DCU is highly important; and a fourth process of performing an importance firmware upgrade operation or a simple firmware upgrade operation according to the determination result regarding the importance level of the firmware upgrade in the third process.
