Provided is a method for preparing an artificial graphite negative electrode material for a rechargeable lithium battery, comprising the steps of: mixing coke and fine particles and obtaining a mixture; performing a first heat treatment of the mixture and obtaining a carbide; and performing a second heat treatment of the carbide and obtaining a graphitized material, wherein the fine particles comprise a metal oxide, a metal hydroxide, or a combination thereof, and the metal comprises Ti, Ni, Al, Si, W, or a combination thereof.
