A system and method for obtaining valid measurements in a cellular communication network (30) is disclosed. In one embodiment, a node 50, 52 (i.e., a measurement node) of the cellular communication network 30 performs a reference measurement at the node 50, 52, and the reference measurement comprises one or more interference elements . Next, the node (50, 52) reduces at least one of the interference elements included in the reference measurement to provide a valid measurement. In one embodiment, the valid measurement is used by the measurement nodes 50, 52, reported to another node 50, 52, or used by the measurement nodes 50, 52, (50, 52).
