The present invention relates to a watermarking method for a depth and texture image-based three dimensional stereoscopic image, which receives a stereoscopic image consisting of a depth image and a texture image, and inserts a watermark into the stereoscopic image. The method of the present invention comprises the following steps: (a) detecting an area which may be displayed as an occlusion area (hereinafter an occludable area) when generating a stereo image from the depth image; (b) extracting an edge area from the texture image; (c) extracting an area into which the watermark may be inserted (hereinafter a selection area), except for the occludable area from the edge area; (d) selecting a block including the selection area (hereinafter an insertion block) among blocks of the texture image, and converting the insertion block into a discrete cosine transform (DCT) block; (e) inserting the watermark into a frequency coefficient of the converted insertion block; and (f) restoring the block into which the watermark is inserted to a texture image block, and obtaining a texture image into which the watermark is inserted. According to the watermarking method, the inserted watermark is not seen, thereby securing invisibility and inserting a robust watermark for a general image processing attack.
