An LDPC encoding / decoding method is disclosed. The encoder receives the set of information bits and performs a lifted LDPC encoding operation on the information bits to generate a codeword using the base LDPC code including one or more punctured nodes. The base LDPC code comprising one or more punctured nodes does not have any multiple edges between the node pairs, while the base LDPC code without one or more punctured nodes has multiple edges between the node pairs. Thus, the punctured node is used to remove multiple edges from the base graph for the lifted LDPC code. The encoder then punctures all lifted bits of the codeword corresponding to one or more punctured base bits of the base LDPC code. The one or more punctured base bits are those corresponding to one or more punctured base nodes of the base LDPC code, respectively. In some embodiments, the one or more punctured base nodes correspond to one or more second order variable nodes. The LDPC decoder treats the punctured code word bits as being erased during the iterative decoding operation.
