The present invention relates to a method for collecting and recycling a NCM-based cathode active material from a waste lithium ion battery containing the NCM-based cathode active material using an eco-friendly and economical method and to a NCM-based cathode active material recycled by the method. The method for collecting a NCM-based cathode active material from a waste lithium ion battery comprises (a) a step for separating a NCM-based cathode active material from a waste lithium ion battery containing the NCM-based cathode active material; (b) a step for leaching the separated NCM-based cathode active material using a leach liquor containing malic acid; (c) a step for forming a Ni_xCo_yMn_z oxalate precipitate by adding oxalic acid to the leach liquor in which the cathode active material is leached; (d) a step for forming a Ni_xCo_yMn_z oxide by heating the precipitate; and (e) a step for forming the NCM-based cathode active material by mixing Li_2CO_3 with the Ni_xCo_yMn_z oxide and heating.
