The present invention relates to a method for detecting the number of banknotes using a double charge and discharge logic of an ultrasonic sensor, more specifically, to a method which detects the number of banknotes passing a return route by being inserted into an automated teller machine (ATM) using the ultrasonic sensor. The present invention detects whether the banknotes are passed or not on the return route using a capacitor voltage value charged in a capacitor by an ultrasonic signal received in a receiving portion by connecting the capacitor to a receiving portion side of the ultrasonic sensor which detects whether the banknotes are passed on the return route. By synchronizing a signal sending point of the ultrasonic sensor and a first discharge point of the capacitor, after the capacitor is discharged, the present invention detects a capacitor charge voltage in a first voltage detecting point set in advance and compares the same with a reference voltage. After discharging the capacitor again after a certain period, by detecting the capacitor charge voltage in a second voltage detecting point set in advance and comparing the same with the reference voltage, the present invention effectively distinguishes of a zero sheet, one sheet, or two sheets of the banknotes.
